Sonars Basics: How To See Fish

This quick trick is the difference between seeing all the fish under the boat and never knowing they were there. Sonar isn't self explanatory but with a single adjustment you can change that for good! Tim explains how to change sensitivity and what to look for on your screen. Whether you're using top of the line gear or just an entry level unit, this information will help you see more fish.

The key to sonar is understanding sensitivity. Sensitivity that is set too high becomes so cluttered you can't see the fish through the mess. Conversely if sensitivity is set too low you'll spend all day staring at a blank screen. Finding that perfect balance requires adjustment but once you've dialed it in you'll know every time a fish passes below the boat.

How To Interpret Side Imaging Sonar

Do you know how to read side imaging? Do you know what its for or how to use it to catch more fish? Understanding side imaging takes some getting used to so today Tim is going to explain the basic functions, show examples of fish, and even talking about how to tune it for your situation.

Most moderately priced units today include side imaging as an option. Its a great tool, saving you valuable time on the water if you know how to use it to your advantage. Its great for locating structure, hazards, schools of fish, and more.

The unit we use is the Humminbird Solix 15. We chose this unit because of its unbelievably clear picture and incredible detail. The first day we used it we were locating sunken boats, rock piles, and other structure in places we fish every day but had never been able to see those objects before.

The Solix is the best of the best for side imaging but there are some other great units on the market as well. Below we will link the unit we're using along with the items needed to link the front and back unit together for waypoint sharing, as well as several other great imaging units at different prices.

Sonar Basics: How to Find Fish

Ever wonder what Fish look like on your fish finder? In this video Tim explains what to look for and breaks down the basics of today's Sonar units. Understanding your sonar unit, the transducer, and "Cone Angle" is very important to painting a complete picture below the surface.

Today, most sonar unit's default frequency setting is 200kHz (Purple Beam). At this frequency, the bottom area that the sonar cone is covering is approximately 1/3 or 33% of your overall depth. An easy number to remember is at 30 feet deep, your sonar cone is scanning 10 feet wide. Another example - at 15 feet your sonar is scanning a 5 feet cone. In a later video we will explain how to change and adjust these frequencies.
